About

The group exhibition “VOICES” at LOW gallery is part of the Riga Pride 2022 official program. The show features the youngest generation of LGBTQ artists from the Baltics who bring forward the marginalised identities of lesbian, trans and non-binary perspectives through their various works.

The exhibition features photographs, graphic and digital prints, textile and large-format jewellery installation. The works are connected through their exploration of queer bodies and the queer community as a whole.

Ksenya Tarasova's (Latvia) textual work reclaims the past, putting together a self-portrait from the shards of authenticity found within an unlived life. Janina Sabaliauskaite's (Lithuania/UK) B&W photo series consciously presents an opening into her private life through closeups of herself, her partner, and various objects.

The B&W bodyscapes made by Dorian Rosenthal (Latvia/Sweden) participate in a shamanistic photographic practice as they define it, creating an intimate connection between the fixed body that falls out of the binary of gender and the ritual of photography.

The graphic prints of Alex Kochan (Lithuania) engage with trans representation using playful imagery. The team behind the project Roosa Ila (Pink Slime) -Liina Lelov and Valdek Laur (Estonia)- creatively appropriate the statement made by Estonia's far right populist politicians about liberals, materializing it into pins to be proudly shown of as a mark of belonging the condemned circle of feminist and LGBTQ supporters.

Poster design by Alex Kochan.

BALSIS/VOICES is supported by State Culture Capital Foundation and Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Culture.
