About

The title of the exhibition “Savējie” ("Our Own") plays on the dual nature of nationalism - selectively inclusive and exclusionary. What are the criteria by which we define our own and others' belonging to the nation? What role do collective memory and cultural hegemonies play here? Simultaneously, the name of the exhibition refers to an individual's perspective or point of view, which is determined by the personal field of the available information - always framed.

Artists are swift to capture and visually translate current processes in society, including physical, emotional, and mental states. Currently, along with an intense moment in history - the war initiated by Russia in Ukraine, capturing and translating these processes is particularly important.

It is expected that the exhibited works will evoke different feelings and associations for various generations. The works tell about the deeply personal experiences of the artists, searching for their belonging in a society full of both imagined and very real borders, where the imprints of the Soviet-era cultural space still exist. "Savējie" involves the viewer in visual narratives about the events of the past, the current geopolitical situation, and the uncertainty of the future. It is an attempt to understand and challenge societal preconceptions about nationalism and the scope of its influence, as well as to shed light on silenced or new narratives that together make up the picture of our age.

The group exhibition features the newly created works of three LMA students, as well as existing works - in photo technique, painting, and ceramics from the 20th and 21st centuries. Annemarija Šchegoleva, Arnis Balčus, Egija Damberga, Ieva Stalšene participate in the exhibition, and the works of Demma Skulma and Elvīra Pinnis are exhibited. Exhibition curator: Alice Hofmane, graphic design: Sabīne Vernere.

The exhibition is supported by EU4ART alliance, LMA, Erasmus+ program, Riga municipality, Artembassy auction house and the State Cultural Capital Fund.
