About

"Bi-Dža, Ge-Ilk, Mir-Nul"

Solo exhibition by Elza Sīle

June 3 – August 14, 2022

Curator: Zane Onckule

Kim? Contemporary Art Centre is proud to present Bi-Dža, Ge-Ilk, Mir-Nul, the largest solo exhibition up to date by Riga-born artist Elza Sīle.

Centred on a personal impulse to revisit childhood nostalgia and critically consider the rigidly (alphabetically) categorised—yet overwhelmingly obscure—content of Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic (LSSR) Encyclopaedia, Bi-Dža, Ge-Ilk, Mir-Nul assembles new wall and floor based works by SiÌ„le.

Elza SiÌ„le (CH/LV) is a visual artist. SiÌ„le combines mental imagery with analytic divisions and builds up an interwoven vocabulary of psycho-spatial typologies in flux. In 2019, SiÌ„le graduated from ZHdK Zurich. In September, SiÌ„le is scheduled to have a residency at ISCP New York provided by Kim? Contemporary Art Centre. Recent solo exhibitions include at PHILIPPZOLLINGER (Zurich, 2021); unanimous consent (Zurich, 2020) and Kulturfolger Zürich (2020). She has participated in numerous two-person and group shows, such as at Haus Konstruktiv (Zurich, 2022); Misako & Rosen (Tokyo, 2022); Kim? Contemporary Art Centre (Riga, 2020); Kunsthalle Zurich (2020); Hamlet (Zurich, 2020) and Galerie Kirchgasse (Steckborn, 2020). In 2020, Sile was a recipient of the Werkschau Prize Zurich and in 2021, of the art stipend City of Zurich.

"YOU are the model! YOU are the majority!"

Solo exhibition by Ilya Lipkin

June 3 – August 14, 2022

Curator: Zane Onckule

Photoshoot production: Evita Goze

Kim? Contemporary Art Centre is proud to present Berlin-based photographer Ilya Lipkin's new body of work conceived over two photoshoot sessions this Spring in Riga and Berlin. Across the series of thirteen photographs, the young Latvians, Russians and Ukrainians of

Riga and Berlin are captured in a variety of laconic but emotionally sensitive large-format photographs that reveal the mimicry, self-presentation and emotional state of this generation. Lipkin's constant interest in studying the simulation of reality and hyper-reality is also echoed in the technical execution of this work – in the post-processing of digital photographs, it acquires a visual resemblance to an analog image, creating a special mood on the surface.

Ilya Lipkin (b. 1982, Riga) is an artist based in Berlin who operates at the intersection of technology, youth and advertising. The photographer is fuelled by the zeitgeist, creating direct, bold, boundary-pushing work which straddles art and consumer culture. Lipkin’s practice is intuitive, dynamic and subversive, and rooted in the realness of the world around him. He is a graduate of the Whitney Independent Study Program and his work has been exhibited at High Art, Arles; Svetlana gallery in NYC; Autocenter Berlin; Hamburger Bahnhof Museum für Gegenwartskunst; Lars Friedrich gallery and Silberkuppe in Berlin; as well as at Nousmoules in Vienna, among other venues. Lipkin’s work and writing has appeared in Texte Zur Kunst, Artforum, Periodico Magazine and others. He is represented by Lars Friedrich gallery. “YOU are the model! YOU are the majority” is Lipkin’s second solo exhibition at Kim? following the solo show in 2017.
